Research at the Exercise Psychology Lab
At the EPL, our research delves into the bio-psycho-social health benefits of physical activity throughout life. We focus on identifying the factors that influence physical activity behavior, encouraging exercise among sedentary groups, and exploring the physiological changes and psychological advantages associated with regular physical activity. We concentrate on using movement as an approach to support cognitive and brain development throughout life.
Research Areas
Cognition
Examining the structural and functional brain changes linked to engaging in exercise.
Mindfulness
Harnessing the benefits of mindfulness practice by incorporating the core principles into physical activity and eating habits.
Aging
Designing physical activity routines to mitigate the effects of aging, including cognition and mobility.
Physical Activity
Creating exercise interventions —such as aerobic, strength, and yoga routines—that enhance cognitive and mental health across the lifespan.
Ongoing Projects
S.A.Y. Exercise Study
The purpose of our study is to examine how 6 months of either yoga, stretching-toning or aerobic exercise will affect the cognitive and physical health of older adults.
The S.A.Y. Exercise study is funded by the National Institute of Aging (NIA), whose mission is to promote research focused on healthy aging and well-being for the ever-increasing population of older adults. Age is one of the biggest risk factors for cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s. Fortunately, exercise is a successful method to improve brain and cognitive health later in life. Our study examines how 6 months of yoga, stretching-toning or aerobic exercise will affect the cognitive and physical health of older adults.
