The EPL offers undergraduate students the opportunity to assist with ongoing research projects each semester. Students can enroll in directed studies (PT 4992 or PT 5976) to earn course credits as part of their lab research training. These courses offer 1-4 variable credit hours, allowing for flexibility based on the student’s needs and commitment. This opportunity is ideal for undergraduates interested in pursuing research or academic careers in medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and allied health fields.

Depending upon the projects that undergraduate students are assigned to, they can expect to be involved in the following activities:

  • Participant Recruitment and Screening
  • Data Collection, Organization, and Processing
  • Functional Fitness Testing
  • Graded Maximal and Submaximal Exercise Testing
  • Preparation of Data Collection Packages
  • Participating as Exercise Specialists in Intervention Studies
  • Institutional Review Board Applications
  • Manuscript Preparation
  • Literature Reviews
  • EPL website updates and social media updates

Participating in research for undergraduate credit at Northeastern University opens up a wide range of research opportunities. Students can engage in activities such as library research, data processing, scheduling participants, and preparing subjects for physiological testing. Working in the EPL provides invaluable training for students interested in pursuing graduate studies or careers in medical and allied health fields, including medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and nursing. We particularly encourage undergraduates with a focus on Exercise and Health Psychology to seek research experience in the EPL.
